Architecture Club – Informational Meeting

Architecture Club

Informational Meeting

Wednesday, May 21

Room 223

Our goal:

The purpose of the Architecture Club at Harrington is to unite students from all majors based on their love of architecture. Together, we will travel to different destinations around the country and view structures that were built by great architects. Traveling with students from different majors will allow us, as a whole, to learn different aspects of design, which will be beneficial to the ultimate goal of everyone involved. In addition to traveling, speakers from different aspects of design that are related to architecture will be invited to speak at the school and share their experiences. This club is meant to help students network and build relationships while learning about something they are passionate about: architecture.

The following destinations are just a suggested start:

  • Wisconsin – Many FLW structures (main one being the Johnson Wax building in Racine), and the Milwaukee Museum of Art by Calatrava (which includes an earlier building by Saarinen).
  • Minnesota – Referred to the “postmodern sampler”. Destinations could include a building at 701 S. 4th Ave. by Helmut Jahn, The Wells Fargo Bank Tower by Cesar Pelli, an office building by Kohn Pedersen Fox, the IDS Center (also known as the last International Skyscraper”) by Phillip Johnson, the Walker Art Center by Herzog and de Meuron, the new Guthrie Theatre by Jean Nouvel, and the new Mpls Public Library by Cesar Pelli.
  • Indiana – In Columbus. In Indianapolis, the Roche and Dinkeloo College Life Insurance Building.
  • Missouri – First and foremost, the St. Louis Arch by Saarinen, the Wainwright building by Sullivan, and the Central Train Station renovation. In Forest Park, the St. Louis Art Museum by Cass Gilbert.
  • Ohio – In Columbus, the Wexner Center for the Arts by Eisenmann. In Cincinnati, The Rosenthal Center for Contemporary Art by Hadid, the Union Terminal/Museum, Proctor and Gamble Corporate Headquarters by Kohn Penderson Fox, and the Aronoff Center for the Arts by Cesar Pelli. In Cleveland, the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame by I. M. Pei.
  • TEXAS-The Kimbell Art Museum by Kahn, the Amon Carter Museum by Johnson, and the Modern Art Museum by Ando.

Travel and Cost:

For all travel, we would be using the Greyhound Bus line. They offer student discounts. The cost would range from $44.00 to $109.00 depending on our destination. The travel times range from 1 day, 3 hours, and 35 minutes to 2 hours, 45 minutes, depending on our destination. Traveling together will give our group plenty of time to get to know each other read and study.

What we need from you:

All we need to get this going are interested students!! There is no obligation to attend every trip of lecture. Specifics about trip and lecture dates, deadlines for payments, and final destinations will be addressed at later meetings. We want your ideas and feedback to make this the best club possible! Even if you don’t plan on joining, please give us your thoughts on what we have so far. Nothing is more valuable to this club than the students of Harrington!!!
