New Cybrary 2.0

The CEC Library now offers the new ability to search its multiple databases and electronic resources at once through its Cybrary 2.0 Discovery Service. A single interface allows you to search journal article databases, the eBook and Safari Books Online collections, and major electronic reference works, all at one time. The link to the Cybrary 2.0 now is live from the Harrington Library website and from the Student and Faculty Portals from the Library tab.

A short guide to using the new search capability is linked from the Harrington Library website as well.

Harrington Design Book Reading Club

Good books answer our questions and inspire us to ask, and to see, and to read. Connie Garner and Leigh Gates are forming a Design Book Reading Club at Harrington College for those of us interested in the visual and designed world, and who like to read. It will be open to all students, staff and faculty.

We will provide a reading list of entertaining and thought-provoking books in the design discipline–some fiction, some factual. We will provide discussion guides and a place to share our ideas, both face-to-face and through an online Forum. To that end, a Meeting Room has been set up on the Student and Faculty Portals.

Our first meeting will be held on Tuesday evening, Oct. 18, 4-5 pm, on the mezzanine level of the first floor gallery. At our initial meeting, we will finalize our reading list and set the frequency of meetings. All books will be available through the Library’s I-Share system or from Amazon.

We plan to start with a popular novel by Erik Larson, “The Devil in the White City,” set in Chicago during World’s Columbian Exposition of 1893. We hope this enjoyable book will spur discussion of Chicago’s built environment and design history.

If you are interested in joining the group, please email Leigh at lgates@harringtoncollege.com.

The Counseling Center of Harrington College of Design

As you begin this new fall semester at HCD, we want to let you know about available counseling services. The Counseling Center provides one-on-one counseling, workshops, programs, and events for the HCD community, as well as other resources and referrals.

Harrington College of Design supports its students in finding effective ways to manage the stresses and pressures of life, and so HCD has partnered with The Chicago School of Professional Psychology to provide on-campus, low-cost counseling services to its students.

I have asked Bluworld a manufacturer of water features for interiors to come and present their product.  It is one of the biggest companies and you can check their products by clicking on the link.  Our students are always eager to use a water feature but do not really know the how to.

The presentation will be on September 19, 2011 in room 106, from 12:00-1:00.
