Good books answer our questions and inspire us to ask, and to see, and to read. Connie Garner and Leigh Gates are forming a Design Book Reading Club at Harrington College for those of us interested in the visual and designed world, and who like to read. It will be open to all students, staff and faculty.
We will provide a reading list of entertaining and thought-provoking books in the design discipline–some fiction, some factual. We will provide discussion guides and a place to share our ideas, both face-to-face and through an online Forum. To that end, a Meeting Room has been set up on the Student and Faculty Portals.
Our first meeting will be held on Tuesday evening, Oct. 18, 4-5 pm, on the mezzanine level of the first floor gallery. At our initial meeting, we will finalize our reading list and set the frequency of meetings. All books will be available through the Library’s I-Share system or from Amazon.
We plan to start with a popular novel by Erik Larson, “The Devil in the White City,” set in Chicago during World’s Columbian Exposition of 1893. We hope this enjoyable book will spur discussion of Chicago’s built environment and design history.
