Harrington students take 1st, 2nd and 3rd places in EDPA Design Challenge

CHICAGO, Ill. (Jan. 6, 2014) – Harrington College of Design interior design student Fleur Webb won first place and a $500 scholarship in the Exhibit Designers and Producers Association (EDPA) Midwest Chapter’s ‘Design Challenge’ competition that began Oct. 16, 2013. Harrington students Gordon Liang and Andrej Pantich were also winners – receiving second and third place – each earning a $250 scholarship.

Participants were judged for their presentations and designs in a 40’x40’ exhibition for FlavoRibbon, a fictitious ice cream brand from rural Wisconsin headed to The Sweets & Snacks Expo in 2014. The winning entries were presented by the students to the Midwest Chapter Members at the Itasca Country Club, along with the professional presentations.

This was Harrington’s second year partnering with EDPA Midwest and participating in the Design Challenge. The purpose of the EDPA is to provide education, leadership and networking for the advancement of its members and the exhibition industry. In addition to providing regional industry education programs through its six chapters, EDPA organizes one annual meeting, tradeshow and golf tournament in a resort location for industry members and their suppliers. EDPA holds quarterly board meetings, publishes a printed quarterly newsletter, monthly electronic newsletter and membership directory.

Don Schmid, Department Manager for Experiential Marketing and Corporate Branding for Hospira Corporation, attended to provide real-world exhibitor feedback to the presenters and moderate a Q&A session.

“I was very impressed as to the caliber of the three Harrington student entries in the EDPA Design contest. The Harrington College of Design student entries were very professional even though they had limited time in which they had to prepare their submission. It was difficult to distinguish the student from the professional entries even though the students competed against distinguished companies with years of exhibit design experience,” Schmid said.

Additionally, the EDPA Midwest chapter sold raffle tickets to raise funds for Exhibit4Smiles, a non-profit dedicated to delivering smiles and holiday gifts to children suffering with life-threatening illnesses.

“We are proud of our students’ capabilities, they are impressive, and this competition demonstrates this point. Harrington has a commitment in providing students connections to the work industry,” adds Constantine Vasilios, Interim Studio Leader of the Interior Design Program. “EDPA has been a wonderful sponsor of competitions and a partner in fostering growth opportunities for Harrington students.”

Harrington student, Jessica Shepard, explains what the competition meant to her: “The EDPA Competition was the first Interior Design competition I have entered. It was very challenging, as it required developing a comprehensive design on an extremely short deadline, but afforded me the opportunity to attend my first design conference. I was able to meet, network, and discuss the industry with Exhibition Design professionals. Participating in the EDPA Competition was an amazing experience and I feel very fortunate for the opportunity.”
