Throughout its history the city of Chicago has inspired myriad urban and architectural innovations, many of which have had far-reaching influence. Indeed, urbanists and architects today still look to many of these historical moments in Chicago as exemplary instances of progression and development. The collection of the Art Institute’s Department of Architecture has extensive holdings on work within the region of Chicago, representing the important innovations, theoretical approaches, and architectural movements spurred by the city’s development. This exhibition surveys Chicago’s rich urban history and explores contemporary approaches to five Chicagoisms—key historical principles that have powered the city’s distinctive evolution. “

Chicago Creative Expo 2014 on 3/14–3/15


This free, two-day event is intended for creative individuals and organizations in design, culinary arts, fashion, film, music, dance, theater, literature and the visual arts. The Creative Chicago Expo connects Chicago’s creative community with resources they need to thrive. Through keynotes, workshops and vendors get professional development expertise.

Join us as we celebrate the reopening of the newly restored corner guestroom and the adjacent exhibit gallery focusing on the history of the Glessners’ New Hampshire summer estate, The Rocks.  In addition, docent John Waters will present an illustrated lecture on The Rocks using a vast array of historic images capturing the architecture, landscape, and every day life of the estate.

Getty’s Images Are Now Free for Twitter, Tumblr and Personal Blogs

Getty, the Seattle-based photo agency, has decided to make a huge portion of its photos free. On Wednesday, the company unveiled the embed tool, which will allow users to include images on websites, such as non-commercial WordPress blogs. The eligible images also come with buttons for Tumblr and Twitter, where a link to the image can be shared.
